What is Root Canal Treatment?

A root canal is a dental operation in which the soft core of the tooth, the pulp, is removed. Nerves, connective tissue, and blood vessels make up the pulp, which helps the tooth develop.

Enamel, dentin, and pulp are the three layers that make up a tooth. Root Canal Treatment is needed when the cavity has become so deep that it has penetrated the pulp. During this procedure, any bacteria from inside the tooth is removed, all root canals are washed, and medication is placed. After Root Canal Treatment, the tooth is sealed to prevent infection.

Why root canal is performed?

A root canal is usually performed when you are under local anesthesia by a general dentist or endodontist. If the soft inner portion of a tooth, known as the pulp, is damaged, inflamed, or infected, a root canal is performed. Even if the pulp is gone, the crown of the tooth — the portion visible above the gums — will remain intact. The easiest way to keep a tooth’s structure is to remove injured or contaminated pulp.

Common causes of damage to the pulp include:

  • deep decay due to an untreated cavity
  • multiple dental procedures on the same tooth
  • a chip or crack in the tooth
  • an injury to the tooth (you might injure a tooth if you get hit in the mouth; the pulp can still be damaged even if the injury doesn’t crack the tooth)

The most common symptoms of the damaged pulp include tooth pain, swelling, and a burning sensation in the gums. To confirm the diagnosis, our dentist will inspect the sore tooth and take X-rays.

What is the procedure for a root canal?

Step 1:-Anesthetic

A small amount of numbing medicine will be applied to the gum near the infected tooth by the dentist. A local anaesthetic will be pumped into the gums after it has taken effect. It’s possible that you’ll feel a painful pain or a burning feeling, but it’ll go away quickly.

You’ll be conscious during the operation, but the anaesthetic will keep you pain-free.

Step 2:- Removing the pulp

When your tooth is numb, the endodontist or general dentist will make a small opening in the top of the tooth. Once the infected or damaged pulp is exposed, the specialist will carefully remove it using special tools called files. They’ll be particularly careful to clean out all the pathways (canals) in your tooth.

Step 3:-Antibiotics

The dentist can apply a topical antibiotic to the area after the pulp has been removed to ensure that the infection is gone and to prevent reinfection. The dentist will fill and seal the tooth with a sealer paste and a rubber-like material called gutta-percha after the canals have been cleaned and disinfected. Oral antibiotics can also be prescribed.

Step 4:-Temporary filling

The dentist will end the procedure by filling the small opening in the top of the tooth with a soft, temporary material. This sealant helps prevent the canals from being damaged by saliva.

What after the root canal?

After the root canal, see the doctor for a follow-up appointment.
A root canal is a form of restorative dentistry. The majority of people who have the operation will benefit from good outcomes for the remainder of their lives. However, how long the effects last is determined by how you care about your teeth.

Daily brushing and flossing are needed for your restored tooth, just as they are for the rest of your teeth.

What is the procedure for a root canal?

To prevent infections, tooth decay, and gum disease, dentists recommend:

  • brushing teeth last thing at bedtime and at least one other time each day
  • using toothpaste that contains fluoride
  • using a suitable toothbrush and replacing it regularly
  • attending regular dental checkups and cleanings
  • flossing to clean between the teeth and prevent the buildup of plaque
  • avoiding sugary drinks and foods, and following a healthy diet.
